Regardless of where you are on your journey, intuitive eating can be hard to explain. It’s unlike anything else out there and talking about it can be kind of intimidating (trust me). In episode 004, I dive into all things Intuitive Eating – from the dietitians who created the revolutionary approach (shout out to Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch) to the research-based benefits of the framework. Consider this your intuitive eating crash course!
What is Intuitive Eating?
Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, the Dietitians that created Intuitive Eating in 1995, define it as a self-care eating framework, which integrates instinct, emotion, and rational thought. I like to explain it as eating (and really living) in a way that makes you the expert of your body and its hunger signals.
Intuitive eating is a weight-inclusive, evidence-based practice that is validated with over 100 studies to date. This personal and dynamic process includes 10 Principles that allow both biological and psychological needs to be met while also removing obstacles that usually come in the form of thoughts, beliefs, and rules. The Intuitive Eating practice supports and honors both mental and physical health. This practice is also aligned with and supports the Health at Every Size movement because all bodies, regardless of their size, shape, and color deserve respect. Essentially, it’s the opposite of a traditional diet. It doesn’t impose guidelines about what to avoid and what or when to eat. Instead, it teaches that you are the best person — the only person — to make those choices.
